My Beginning

I was introduced to sewing at a very early age. Born into a family of only girls, and there are several of us, we were blessed with an imaginative and artistic mother. Not having money in abundance my parents had little money to purchase new things, so my mother would make clothes for her little girls. Not to allow her creativity to be stifled by necessity, my mother did not simply "clothe" us, she made for us the most adorable, frilly, feminine frocks that you could imagine. I have her to thank for my desire to create lovely, feminine, frilly frocks for girls of every age, size, and for every occasion.
As I grew older my mother would make for us fancy dresses, or she would take us, "treasure hunting" for fancy frocks at local thrift stores. Who knew those places held such jewels if only you looked? Dresses that cost but a dollar were treasures to us, as long as they were a pretty color, had lace, ribbons or bows, we would take them home and with help from our mother we would make them fit by use of that beautiful invention, the safety pin, several safety pins, to be precise. Donning these dresses we entered other worlds, worlds of our own making. This encouraged my imagination and gave me a love for playacting. School plays gave me a further love for this art and the theater.
Growing up in a family where love was abundant, but money not quite as much, I learned the value making things with my own hands, things of good quality that would last. This teaching I can attribute to both my father and mother, both artists, and both hard workers. I made my own clothes for many years, and often still do. I have made costumes for plays, and an independent film, both period costumes and fantastical, also bridesmaid dresses and several wedding dresses. I take joy in designing and sewing costumes and clothing of good quality that will last a long time and bring joy to the wearer. Whether the clothes are casual, semi-formal or formal, whether they are costume of a fantastical nature or period, or somewhere in-between, I love to sew and design them. I am always looking for new adventures upon which to travel to learn more about this craft. I hope you might join me on that journey someday. Thank you for reading.
